Memre Oly Carmel (2022, Documenta 15)

Installation View – “Memre – Oly Carmel” – Documenta 15, museum Fridericianum (Kassel, Germany)
The small 32x32cm installation ‘Memre – Oly Carmel’ was specially created for The Black Archives’ Documenta 15 exhibition: ‘Interwoven Histories of Solidarity- Documenting Black Pasts & Presents’. It is a miniature version of part of Linger’s art installation Granma Dolly Gi Tori,  in which he placed visualisations (a drawing and photograph) of his findings from his ongoing research into the Moravians of Herrnhut.
The outside of the installation is painted with “blauwsel” (bluing) and the inside holds  “Pemba doti” (white kaolin clay ). Both are products that are  ritually  used in the Afro-Surinamese Winti religion, amongst other things to protect and cleanse. For Linger, Winti is a means to (re)connect with his Surinamese roots and recurs in all his artworks.
